The 7 characteristics of an experience, Maurizio River Serena

In a world overflowing with products, services, and endless choices, what sets apart the truly exceptional? The answer lies in Experience Design (XD), a powerful approach that shapes the way we interact with the world around us. This article marks the beginning of a series that will delve into the intricacies of Experience Design, culminating in a proposed methodology for crafting unforgettable experiences. But first, let's explore what Experience Design is and dissect the characteristics that define it.

Why Now?

Before we dive into the depths of Experience Design, it's crucial to understand why it's gaining momentum. Two compelling reasons drive this shift:

  1. From Story-Telling to Story-Living: It's not just about telling stories; it's about creating stories that people can live and immerse themselves in. Brands must offer experiences worth narrating that engage customers in first-person.

  2. It's All About Emotions: The journey of Experience Design is a roller oaster of emotions. The emotions people encounter must align with the meanings they seek and the objectives set by brands for these experiences.

These insights are substantiated by intriguing statistics. According to a study titled "The age of re-enchantment" by Wunderman Thompson in June 2023:

  • 65% of individuals crave brands that awe them with spectacular advertising.

  • 61% desire brands that evoke intense emotions.

  • 49% are more likely to buy from brands that bring them a sense of joy.

  • Astonishingly, 70% can't recall the last time a brand truly excited them.

To underscore the significance of Experience Design, consider this quote from Rich Teerlink, former CEO of Harley Davidson, on Disney University: "It's the place where they teach us how to sprinkle pixie dust on our clientele."

Defining Experience Design

At its core, Experience Design (XD), as articulated by Emile Aarts and Stefano Marzano in their work 'The New Everyday: Views on Ambient Intelligence', is "a practice that revolves around designing products, processes, services, events, and environments. It prioritizes the quality of user experiences and culturally relevant solutions."

The Differentiation Scale: Progression Of Economic Value

To appreciate the evolution of Experience Design, we must first understand the Differentiation Scale developed by Joseph Pine and James Gilmore, in their seminal work "The Experience Economy." It represents the progression of economic value:

  • Extract Commodities

  • Make Goods

  • Deliver Services

  • Stage Experiences

As we explore the frontier of this scale, recent research in the field endeavors to unravel what lies beyond:

  • Guide Transformations

We are now at the juncture where experiences transcend mere transactions, playing a pivotal role in fostering personal growth, self-discovery, and a profound sense of purpose.

The Essence of an Experience

Ultimately, an experience is a first-person narrative. It should leave people feeling better and enable them to solve their problems, whether those problems are functional, emotional, or identity-related.

Experience Characteristics

Now, let's delve into the essential characteristics that define remarkable experiences:

  1. Subjectivity: Experiences are inherently subjective and influenced by various factors, including the user's culture, characteristics, physical actions, perceptual and cognitive processes, as well as the artifacts involved and the context in which they occur. For instance, when visitors to an art exhibition view a piece of artwork, their interpretations and emotional responses can vary widely. A painting that one person finds deeply moving and thought-provoking may leave another feeling indifferent or even confused.

  2. Co-Creation: Users become active participants, shaping their experiences. AirBnB, for instance, defied industry norms by allowing users to stay with strangers, fostering meaningful connections with local communities.

  3. Multi-Dimensionality: Experiences are non-linear and multi-dimensional, resembling constellations of touchpoints. They embrace various realms, from the human and physical to the digital and virtual. In Dreamscape Immersive experiences, you wear VR headsets and motion-capture gear that allows you to physically move within the virtual environment. As you explore these immersive worlds, you can interact with other participants, touch virtual objects, and even feel sensations like wind or vibrations that match the virtual scenario.

  4. Time-Sensitivity: Every experience has a beginning and an end, divided into phases: before, during, after, and over time. Facilitating sharing during and after the experience is essential for building authentic user-generated communication. Think about the different steps involved in planning and embarking on travel adventure.

  5. Meaningfulness: A meaningful experience transforms, inspires, and remains unforgettable. It forms a potent emotional bond with the provider (brand), generating cultural capital. As Don Norman stated, "Meaningful experiences produce cultural capital". Think about Burning Man, the annual event held in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada, USA, known for its unique and transformative experiences. Participants, often referred to as "Burners," gather to create a temporary city dedicated to self-expression, art, community, and self-reliance.

  6. Orchestration of Touchpoints: Experiences involve interactions between people and brands, creating ideas, emotions, and memories. This user-centric view includes: The Experiencescape: The physical environment where the experience unfolds. Contact personnel: The individuals who directly interact with users. Other customers: The role of other customers in shaping the experience. Invisible organizations and systems: The behind-the-scenes elements that impact the experience. For example, Apple's retail experience is designed to fosters a positive and memorable shopping journey, contributing to Apple's brand loyalty and customer satisfaction. The Experiencescape in Apple stores features minimalist and aesthetically pleasing designs, allowing customers to interact with the latest technology in a sleek environment. Contact personnel, known as Apple Geniuses and Specialists, provide expert assistance and personalized product recommendations. Other customers can also play a role in the experience, as customers often engage in product demonstrations and share their insights with fellow shoppers. Behind the scenes, Apple's systems ensure that products are readily available, software updates are seamless, and technical support is efficient.

  7. Emotion Triggering: Brand experiences encompass sensations, emotions, cognitions, and behavioral responses triggered by specific stimuli, whether brand-related or not. Understanding the meanings people seek and the emotions that can be triggered is pivotal in crafting effective Experience Design. This concept draws from the work of Pieter Desmet at the Delft Institute of Positive Design, who correlates meanings with nine category of emotions from animation to optimism, from assurance to gratification and empathy. IKEA's marketing and in-store experiences are designed to evoke positive emotions related to homeliness, comfort, and creativity. When customers visit an IKEA store, they encounter fully furnished room setups that make them feel like they're stepping into a cozy home. This triggers emotions of comfort, assurance, and satisfaction. Additionally, IKEA's focus on DIY furniture and home decor fosters a sense of creativity and accomplishment, generating emotions of optimism and gratification.

“Meaningful experiences trigger emotions. Key is understanding what meanings people are looking for and what emotions can be triggered to inform the experience design.”

In our upcoming articles, we will propose a methodology for harnessing these characteristics to design transformative experiences that captivate users and leave a lasting impact. Stay tuned as we unravel the magic of Experience Design.
